AAHFN Symposium

"A Multidisciplinary Approach to Management of Congestion in Patients with Acute Heart Failure Syndromes"

This one-hour satellite symposium provided participants with valuable information about the epidemiology, clinical presentation, and management of acute heart failure syndromes (AHFS). This activity was designed for Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and Certified Case Managers.

Annually, AHFS account for 1 million US hospital admission, and contribute to another 2.4 million. AHFS are costly and have a high mortality. The goal of treatment is to achieve clinical stability. Unfortunately, AHFS are often treated inadequately. Optimal treatment includes pharmacotherapy and lifestyle changes. Successful management requires patient compliance with recommendations. To achieve this, there must be extensive education for patients and caregivers and monitoring of patient to assure that they comply with the treatment regimen.

This satellite symposium provided participants with a detailed description of the clinical and laboratory findings in AHFS. Current information on agents used to treat clinical signs and symptoms was reviewed along with recommended lifestyle changes. The content of a patient education program and the importance of education in achieving compliance was also discussed.
