Michael E. Thase, MD, a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, is an active clinical investigator, whose research focuses on the assessment and treatment of mood disorders, including the correlates of differential response to various treatments for depression. A 1979 graduate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine, Dr. Thase has directed the Mood Disorders Treatment and Research Program at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic since its inception in 1987 and is now the Chief of Adult Academic Psychiatry. A Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Thase has authored or co-authored over 450 scientific articles and book chapters, as well as 14 books. Dr. Thase remains active in the community through numerous presentations regarding affective disorders at state hospitals and seminars for the Office of Education and Regional Programming, as well as for community hospitals. Dr. Jonathan W. Stewart, MD, is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University in New York and Research Psychiatrist for New York State Psychiatric Institute.

Dr. Stewart earned his B.A. in mathematics from Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania and went on to receive his MD from Yale University School of Medicine. He completed his medical internship at Children’s Hospital and Adult Medical Center, San Francisco. Dr. Stewart completed his residency in psychiatry at Hahnemann Hospital, Philadelphia.

After completing his residency, Dr. Stewart worked as a staff psychiatrist at both Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Since 1978, Dr. Stewart has been a Research Psychiatrist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute.

John M. Zajecka, MD, is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical Director of the Depression Treatment and Research Center at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, and Rush North Shore Medical Center in Skokie, Illinois. Dr. Zajecka has also been in private practice since 1988.

Dr. Zajecka earned his MD at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. After graduating, he completed his internship and psychiatric residency at Rush.

Dr. Zajecka’s expertise includes the study and treatment of depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders. He has authored numerous publications and conducted research in affective disorders, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia. He has also done research and published extensively in the areas of treatment-resistant mood disorders, and safety and side effect issues related to psychotropic medications. He has a special interest in the management of treatment-resistant mood disorders, including the long-term outcomes of this population.

Dr. Zajecka serves on the scientific advisory boards for the National Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, as well as for several pharmaceutical companies. He was past Co-Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board Member for the Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago and past President of the Midwest Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Dr. Zajecka received the Upjohn Young Investigators Award for Psychiatric Research and twice received the Special Recognition Award for Training Psychiatric Residents.
