Institute Director and Head of Department
Botnar Research Centre and Oxford University Institute of Musculoskeletal Sciences
Nuffield Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre
Oxford, England
Graham Russell, MD, PhD, is the Norman Collisson Professor of Musculoskeletal Sciences; Director, Oxford University Institute of Musculoskeletal Sciences (Botnar Research Centre); Professor and Head of the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedic Surgery; and Professorial Fellow, St. Peter’s College at the University of Oxford in Oxford, England.
Dr Russell received his doctoral degree from the Medical Research Council Mineral Metabolism Unit and Department of Chemical Pathology at the University of Leeds Medical School, Leeds, England, and his doctor of medicine degree from Oxford University Medical School, Oxford.
Dr Russell has worked in the field of calcium metabolism and bone diseases throughout his career and has played a key role in identifying the biological and clinical effects of bisphosphonates, including successful applications of this class of drugs in Paget’s disease of bone. He is involved in ongoing studies to assess the molecular mechanisms of action of bisphosphonates and in the development of novel therapies. A prolific writer, Dr Russell has published numerous articles on the pharmacokinetics and mechanisms of action of bisphosphonates, clinical disorders of bone resorption, and calcium metabolism in such journals as Lancet, British Medical Journal, The New England Journal of Medicine, and the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.
Dr Russell is past president of the International Bone and Mineral Society, a founding member of the National Osteoporosis Society (UK), and past chairman of its Council of Management. Among awards he has received for his contributions are the John B. Johnson award of The Paget Foundation for Paget’s Disease of Bone and Related Disorders, and the W.F. Neuman award of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.
