Program Description

Anemia is common in cancer patients, but the impact is often poorly appreciated. It is a major cause of tumor hypoxia, a condition that can further tumor survival and malignant progression and also reduces the effectiveness of several anticancer therapies, including radiotherapy and oxygen-dependent cytotoxic agents.

Clinical studies in patients with solid tumors and non-myeloid hematologic malignancies have convicingly shown that treatment with erythropoetic stimulating factors (ESPs) improves mean hemoglobin concentration, reduces transfusion requirement, and improves quality of life. Despite the availability of effective treatment, patients of cancer- or chemotherapy-associated anemia remain under-treated. Strategies for incorporating clinical guidelines into practice and the safety and pharmacoeconomic issues surrounding treatment of anemia with ESPs will be discussed in this activity.

Target Audience

This program is designed specifically for Hematologists, Medical Oncologists, Pharmacists, Oncology Nurses, Physician Assistants, and Certified Case Managers caring for patients receiving chemotherapy for cancer.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the central role of the management of anemia in prognosis and quality of life in cancer patients (with or without chemotherapy)
  • Identify and assess the latest treatment options in erythropoietin stimulating proteins (ESPs) for the management of cancer / chemotherapy-induced anemia
  • Evaluate and apply the evolving guidelines of early ESP treatment (at Hb<11 gm/dL) for cancer / chemotherapy-induced anemia
There are no fees to participate in this activity. A certificate of completion for physicians and nurses and a statement of credit for pharmacists may be printed out after viewing the program and submitting your post-test and evaluation form.
